Introduction to the acts
of the Congress NEWS 95

The Proceedings of the International Rock Art and Cognitive Archaeology Congress NEWS95, held under the aegis of IFRAO (The International Federation of Rock Art Organisations), and organized by CeSMAP, the Study-Centre and Museum of Prehistoric Art in Pinerolo, are presented to the international scientific community with the conviction that they constitute an important body of work, an example of the possibility of attaining results of high scientific quality. The coordination of the congress¹s sessions, the discussions of different themes, presented by specialists highly qualified in their sectors, the round-tables devoted to topical subjects, and the public lectures, which involved people from outside the congress who were interested in cultural problems, are the source of these Proceedings

However, these Proceedings are not simply a record of the scientific event; they have also benefited from revisions made by the authors since the congress, in their institutes all over the world, and the result of the precious work of the Chairpersons of different Symposia, with a combination of scientific rigour and valid human relationships. Therefore, in view of these methodological considerations, the period of time that has elapsed between the congress and the publication of the Proceedings does not appear excessive, since it is the mark of a determination to preserve the momentum of the congress, right up to the realisation of this corpus, which is now offered for approval or criticism.

The decision to publish these Proceedings in a mixed format, with one volume of abstracts and one CD-rom containing all the reports presented with an abundance of iconography, was taken in consideration of the current trend for electronic scientific publishing, permitting a fast, inexpensive and simple exchange of information and images through data transmission between institutions and researchers, and thus fulfilling the aim implicit in every scientific reunion. i.e. the greatest possible diffusion of knowledge.

Therefore, the aim of these Proceedings is to take part in the progress brought about by the computer revolution, and the diffusion of similar initiatives so as to consolidate relations of exchange between researchers, scholars, the public and consequently the whole of humanity.

It was the intelligent work of the Academic Committee and Chairpersons, the passion and scientific rigour of the speakers, and the support of International Authorities, which made it possible for this NEWS95 event to take place. Special thanks are also offered to the Authorities of the Piedmont Region, the Province of Turin and the City of Pinerolo, because of their support for this undertaking.

Finally, it is necessary to underline that the realisation of these Proceedings, the volume and the CD-rom, has been possible thanks to the engagement and the professionalism of the CeSMAP staff, together with outside operators, who have been engaged in a long and sometimes difficult task of organization.

del Congresso NEWS 95

Gli Atti del Congresso Internazionale di Arte Rupestre e Archeologia Cognitiva NEWS95, promosso dall’IFRAO, International Federation of Rock Art Organizations, ed organizzato dal CeSMAP, Centro Studi e Museo d’Arte Preistorica di Pinerolo, vengono ora presentati alla comunità scientifica internazionale nella convinzione di aver realizzato un’opera destinata a rimanere a lungo come esempio della possibilità di ottenere risultati di amplissimo respiro e di altissima qualità scientifica.

Il coordinamento del lavoro sviluppato durante le Sessioni congressuali, le discussioni dei vari argomenti presentati dai più qualificati specialisti di ogni settore, le tavole rotonde, durante le quali si sono approfondite tematiche di grande attualità, le conferenze pubbliche, che hanno consentito di coinvolgere anche persone esterne al congresso ma attente e partecipi alle problematiche culturali, hanno dato origine a questi Atti, che non sono la semplice registrazione dell’evento scientifico, ma sono frutto della rielaborazione degli autori nel periodo post-congressuale, nei loro istituti sparsi per il mondo, e del prezioso lavoro di raccordo svolto dai Chairmen dei vari Symposia, che hanno saputo coniugare rigore scientifico e validi rapporti umani.

Pertanto, il tempo intercorso tra il congresso e la pubblicazione degli Atti, alla luce anche delle suddette considerazioni metodologiche, non deve essere ritenuto eccessivo, anzi è la garanzia che si è lavorato per mantenere vivo l’impulso congressuale sino alla realizzazione di questo corpus, che ora viene consegnato all’apprezzamento e alla critica.

La scelta di pubblicare questi Atti in forma mista, un volume di abstracts e un CD-rom che contiene tutte le relazioni presentate con un abbondante corredo iconografico, è stata determinata dalla considerazione che la tendenza attuale nel campo dell’editoria scientifica va orientandosi verso il mezzo elettronico, in grado di consentire scambio di dati e di immagini per via telematica tra istituzioni e studiosi nel modo più economico, facile e rapido possibile, consentendo quindi di raggiungere quel risultato che è implicito in ogni riunione scientifica, e cioè la maggior diffusione possibile della conoscenza.

Perciò, con questi Atti si vuole partecipare al progresso generato dalla rivoluzione informatica, auspicando che iniziative analoghe continuino a diffondersi per consolidare la rete di interscambio per gli studiosi, gli studenti, il pubblico, e quindi, utopisticamente, per tutti gli uomini.

La realizzazione di questo evento conclusivo del Congresso NEWS95 è stata possibile grazie all’intelligente opera del Comitato Accademico e dei Chairmen, alla passione ed al rigore scientifico dei singoli relatori, al favore confermato dalle Autorità internazionali. Un ulteriore ringraziamento, inoltre, va rivolto alle Autorità della Regione Piemonte, della Provincia di Torino e della Città di Pinerolo, le quali hanno continuato a sostenere questa impresa.

Infine, occorre mettere in luce il fatto che la produzione di questi Atti, volume e CD-rom, è stata attuata grazie all’impegno ed alla professionalità dello staff del CeSMAP, unitamente agli operatori esterni, impegnati in un lungo, ed a volte difficile, lavoro organizzativo.
