My ISP recently went out of business & I am using a new provider. At the previous e-mail address, I was on the Rock Art mailing list. I am trying to get on the list again, but all links appear to be severed (including yours). Is the mailing list still in operation? If so, how can I reach it to re-subscribe? Tnx AW Woodman

I did Rock Art for one of my final exams in Arhcaeology at Bristol University. Very intersted in African Rock Art and was wondering if anyone has any information about the Cave of Swimmers depicted in the film The English Patient. Does such a place really exist? Looking forward to hearing from someone, Thanks.

The Swedish site is without banners and will contend a short homepage in Swedish. The other part is my second book in analysing ancient ideas preferably on our rocks. It shows our connections to the known cultures. On Tripod URL http://members.tripod.com/~catshaman/ is my first entire first book. Together they contends more than 1000 pictures in the field, since the figures are half the message.

On Tripod is few banners. The homepage contends my first popular version about the ideas on Northern rocks compared to Sumeria, Egypt an other cultures. That means search for the Inanna and Isis myths in the pictures since we can call it Ritual Age and space-time. But there is much more as a syllable and ideogram language on our rocks. My other site with no banners will be transferred to my second book Echosophy with more detailed analysis of above theme and more about Bronze Age.

when i was i child my father presented me with a very interesting book. it was a synthesis of the the conquests by the various human civilizations. an image stuck in my mind out of that book. it was a petroglyph of a white woman found in Africa. Today, after more than twenty years, my best friend asked me if i knew anything about a queen named Hutu who lived in Africa well before the birth of Christ. For some reason i associated that name with the "White Lady" i recall from that book. So i made an internet research and i was able to find images of the "White Lady" of Bradeberg. Unfortunately that image did not strike the right cord. So i was puzzled and when i found this site i thought you might answer to my questions: 1) "Are there more than one image portraing a "White Lady" or the difference i seem to recall is due only to the idealization of a childhood memory?" 2) "Can you help me with my research on Queen Hutu (Sources Or Information)?" thank you for your attention Antonino Fermani

A visit to my homepage give a short presentation of my ideas about the ancient ideas hiding in our Northern rock carvings. There is also two chapters out of my triplet book about rockcarvings. One chapter is about Sailors in spacetime. The other about The Law of Brotherhood, which is the oldest known law in Europe. I call it also the Law of the Naked. There is also the oldest Code of Marriage. It is short but still it say what needed.

We have some pictures of artifacts on our site, but next winter I'll make an effort to photograph the easier petroglyphs on St. Vincent and put them up on the site. In the meantime I found some snapshots I made at the petroglyph park on Guadaloupe some years ago and I'll put them up and post the URL here. They aren't good records but they are better than nothing.

I have spent the last twelve years decyphering Indian petroglyphs. I have now cataloged more than six-hundred symbols and read hundreds of petroglyphs in this area. Is there anyone but me that can actually read them? I have looked at the trash that exists in print from Mallery to a treasure-hunter publication and have found nothing that stands the test. I would love to exchange glyphs/meanings with someone, especially for lead, tin, iron, etc. I have most of the others including gold, silver, copper, thunder, death, power, medicine paths, etc. Plus, I know how to read the rocks. Any takers?

Hueco Tanks State Historical Park near El Paso, Texas, USA, has come under terrible siege by the recreational climbing community, who are trying to force the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the State of Texas to disregard several thousand pictographs and other cultural materials in favor of carte blanche bouldering and technical climbing. Hueco Tanks is unique for its array of ancestral Puebloan masks, and significant rock art styles from Early Archaic through 19th Century art and historic names from the 1850's stagecoach period. This battle between climbers and rock art enthusiasts has been building for the past 15 years. Currently the climbers are engaged in a massive, international letter-writing campaign, using the Internet, to try to force the current management plan to be dropped, favoring climbing over cultural resource protection. The same battle has raged in Oregon, where climbers have impacted lava tube caves containing pictogrphs. In both the Oregon caves and at HuecoTanks the climbers created bolted routes and leave climbing chalk with adverse impact to rock art . No formal studies at these locations have been undertaken to determine what impacts are associated with chalk, but there is observational evidence that if left in place, climbing chalk (calcium carbonate or magnesium sulfate) undergoes some type of chemical or physical change and begins to bond with rock surfaces or occlude any art that it covers. Apparently we are also dealing with silica gel, sodium bicarbonate with possible dyes and carbon compounds. Native Americans may be infuriated by resultant damage to rock art sites, which they consider sacred. What is the method of nominating Hueco Tanks for world heritage designation, thus calling more attention to its significance, as well as the attack being waged against its cultural resources? Is it ICOMOS through which nominations are made? Texas Parks and Wildlife has implemented a very good pro-rock art protection management plan, which limits the number of visitors, closes unique, rock art heavy areas off to all visitation without a guide, and restricts climbing to very limited areas. It requires all visitors to undergo a 20-minute orientation and has created a volunteer guide service through a "Friends" group. This is a very sound plan and it is what the climbing community is attacking. To visit some of the debate on the Internet go to: http://curly.physics.utep.edu/latest.htm (climbers' site) http://curly.physics.utep.edu/FAQ.htm (this site is very negative toward reosurce protection - full of untruths) http://www.outdoorlink.com/accessfund/notes/v16/caving.html http://www.outdoorlink.com/accessfund/notes/v17/letters.html http://www.outdoorlink.com/accessfund/notes/v18/letters.html http://www.outdoorlink.com/accessfund/notes/v19/letters.html http://www.outdoorlink.com/accessfund/notes/v19/sacred.html http://www.outdoorlink.com/accessfund/notes/v20/letters.html http://www.outdoorlink.com/accessfund/notes/v21/letters.html

I am looking for information on the plant and animal resources during the UpperPalaeolithic period of France and Spain. I am most interested in the material culture that makes a cave/hut a home at that time. Additionally.... Has there been any underwater exploration of the south shore of the Bay of Biscay ( Northern and Basque shores) to determine possible under water cave painting sites similar to Cosquer?

Rock art is not my specialty as an archaeologist, so I would appreciate any comments you may have on this. I have been approached with what appears to be a large-scale pictograph in black and red on a relatively horizontal rock outcropping above a river in my part of Ontario. This has been interpreted by a geographer as a crude map of the river system. I have not visited the site, but have seen photos. Has anyone ever seen such a thing in this part of the world? There is interest in conducting excavations at the site, but my hunch is that if this is indeed a pictograph, the site may have only been used for dreamquests and the like, which would leave little or no artifactual evidence. Can the pigments be dated or chemically analyzed? Thanks, - J. Ferguson

My paper (later, article) on sustainable futures for natural history collections (given at a World Congress at Cambridge Univ.)probably has the most salience. Again, I am extremely interested in your comments and personal scholarly activities.
